Ayurveda at Home

With the change of Kapha season into Pitta (cool and damp to hot and moist), which happens earlier here in SW Florida than locales north, it is a great time for cleansing.

Ayurvedic Massage Treat yourself to a healing therapeutic massage specifically for balancing your Doshas, a Swedana steam therapy or a Joyful Signature facial with our amazing Eminence products to brighten and rejuvenate your skin and lift your spirits. What is Ayurveda? (eye-yur-vay-duh)

ayurveda
Ayurveda is India’s 5,000 year old “Science of Life.” It is the art of  living in harmony with nature, and it explains the nature of everything in the universe. When we learn about Ayurveda, we learn about ourselves, how we “tick,” and how we can be our healthiest and happiest at all times.

Ayurveda teaches us to live life in balance. And it helps us to find exactly what that balance is for each one of us. Since we are all different, body, mind and emotions, we learn individual strategies
for diet, exercise, and lifestyle. Since health is more than the physical — it is also mental, emotional and spiritual — Ayurveda can be used to help us create and maintain not only healthy bodies, but also healthy relationships. It can help us to better understand and be more empathetic to ourselves and the people in our lives. We can work with our natural strengths to help balance each other out. We can stop trying to “change” others to fit our needs, and instead accept a person’s characteristics as a part of their wholeness and honor who they are.

Ayurvedic principles can be applied to our work and career, to help us find and live our dharma. They can help us with our family lives, in parenting and to help resolve conflicts. Ayurveda is a lifestyle that shows us how to take care of ourselves in a simple, practical and loving way. An Ayurvedic looks to the mindbody for what it needs for balance, self healing, homeostasis.

Why have we not heard much about it until introduced by Dr. Deepak Chopra (and a handful of others) in the early 90’s? Simple. It was banned by the British Government in 1833! We are so grateful to be aware of this vast wealth of information to allow us to gain more control of our health and wellbeing.

If you would like to learn more and get specific recommendations for your health challenge, please schedule a private consultation with one of our Ayurvedic Practitioners. Ayurveda 101 is offered twice per year at the studio. Also check out my favorite book on Ayurveda, Perfect Health by Dr. Deepak Chopra. It is available for loan in our library and for sale in the Boutique.

Ayurveda at Home

Welcome Spring and Kapha season. Living here in Bonita Springs is like living in perpetual spring/summer. I am so loving my life and feeling grateful for all my blessings, most especially the weather. Watching the weather in areas north and having a couple days of overcast skies creates the greatest contrast to fully appreciate it.

As the seasons change from winter to spring, take care to stay in balance, especially if your dominant dosha is Kapha. (Think of your dominant dosha as your weak point.  If you already have an excess of something and pile on more, it naturally creates an imbalance.)

Kapha dosha is like earth and water together, and is heavy, cool and moist like the weather up north.

This is not our typical daily weather here in SW Florida. Even so, imbalances can still occur and common conditions can be aggravated in this time. (Don’t know your dominant dosha? Go to joyfulyoga.com and take the quiz.)

When our Kapha dosha is out of balance, it can manifest as colds, sinus congestion, weight gain, allergies, sluggishness, lethargy, depression and a lack of motivation. Here are some suggestions for balancing Kapha:

  • Make choices that are warm, light, energizing, and purifying.
  • Follow a regular daily routine; avoid taking naps during the day.
  • Favor lighter, drier foods with pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes.
  • Add raw local honey to your diet as a sweetener and tonic.
  • Exercise every day: Vinyasa Yoga, brisk walking, running, bicycling, swimming, aerobics.
  • Surround yourself with warm and bright colors, such as yellow, orange, purple and red. Add stimulating fragrances to your environment too.

Primordial Sound Mantra Meditation and Our Free Intro to Meditation Classes

Okay, fellow yogis and yoginis, here is the link to one of the two major studies done and published in November 2010. This one was done at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard) and explains how meditation alters and rewires the brain. Read it and be amazed! http://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/mindfulness-meditation-improves-connections-in-the-brain-201104082253.

The next Primordial Sound Meditation Instruction is April 5th and 6th. March is already full! At your request, we have consolidated the workshop into two days!

Primordial Sound Meditation, as taught by the Chopra Center for Well Being, is the gold standard of meditation techniques. As one of one of 1100 instructors worldwide, I am honored to be teaching this amazing mantra meditation technique! As a meditator since 1976, I have tried every style available and know from experience that this is the best of techniques.

For most, meditation is the missing component in their Yoga practice. Formal instruction is not necessary to meditate, but if you’ve been struggling to establish a practice or would like to revive one that has slipped away, it will definitely help. Studies have shown that only 3% of people who begin to meditate are practicing after 5 years and 75% who receive formal instruction and ritualize it are consistently practicing after 5 years.

If you would like more information or would like to learn to meditate please join us the first Friday evening each month for Intro to Meditation. From 4 – 4:30 PM, we will offer information and instruction in a simple mantra meditation. This is followed at 4:30 by 20 minutes in silent meditation. Come for the instruction or just the meditation. All are welcome. Join your Yoga community in “the gap” and reap the rewards of meditating among like minds!

Reimbursement for your Yoga classes and Meditation Instruction? According to CNN, Medicare is now reimbursing for Yoga and meditation for heart disease patients! This is such exciting news! The world is evolving nicely as we see the Health Insurance industry embrace and acknowledge Yoga as a viable, quantifiable healing modality to keep the body in a better state of health.

As a former insurance broker, I am grateful to Drs. Chopra, Ornish, Weil, Frawley and Ladd for their diligence in this matter. Insurance companies know that a regular practice of Yoga and meditation reduces hospital admissions by a whopping 73%!

Check with your insurance company to see if they may offer reimbursement. If not, maybe a letter or call could encourage them to participate.
