Shirodhara and January Specials

Have you experienced Shirodhara Heavenly Head Massage?

Shirodhara, an element of Ayurvedic medicine, has been used for 5,000 years in India but has only recently been “discovered” by the West. Fittingly, Shirodhara today combines ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern health and beauty techniques in a blissful spa experience.

The word shirodhara breaks down into “shiro,” meaning head, and “dhara,” which means flow. Together they form a concept that aims to bring physical and emotional balance which is achieved through a relaxing technique in which warmed oil is poured over a client’s forehead, at the “third eye” followed by head and shoulder massage.

Oil is poured slowly in a steady stream from a freestanding copper vessel directly on the forehead for 15-20 minutes as you lie on a warmed massage table.  You will be lulled into a tranquil state of well-being and peaceful meditation, as the oil caresses your skin and hair and wends its way down and into another vessel below the head.

When the bottom vessel is full, the oil is used to gently massage the head, hair, scalp, neck and shoulders. “The oils gently nourish the skin and naturally replenish the oils that are lost throughout the day,” says Raichur, a naturopath, aesthetician and chemist, and the author of Absolute Beauty: Secret to Radiant Skin and Inner Vitality Through the Art and Science of Ayurveda (HarperCollins, 1997). It is recommended to leave the oil on the scalp as long as possible to receive the full benefits to hair, scalp and cranium.

A Shirodhara session can follow an organic facial, herbal body scrub, or a massage.

Benefits of Shirodhara

Shirodhara works primarily on the mental sheath or “manomaya kosha” as it is referred to in Ayurveda. Shirodhara is traditionally used to calm the nerves, harmonize vata constitutions, release stored emotions, and purify the mind. In Ayurvedic Medicine, it is considered an important tool in the pursuit of higher states of consciousness. Shirodhara has been traditionally shown to help with fatigue, mental exhaustion, anxiety, insomnia, some mental disorders, headache, excessive thinking, nervousness, and many other conditions commonly affecting persons in today’s active lifestyle.

Regular Shirodhara enhances circulation to the brain, improves memory, nourishes hair and scalp, assists in providing sound sleep and calms the body and mind. Shirodhara is one of the most effective treatments for reducing stress and nervous tension.

It has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of conditions including eye diseases, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, greying of hair, neurological disorders, memory loss, insomnia, hearing impairment, tinnitus, vertigo, Ménière’s disease and certain types of skin diseases like psoriasis and a long list of others. Shirodhara is a very simple, yet profound, treatment that can allow increased healing as it moves the body into homeostasis.

And what is the downside to Shirodhara? When the treatment ends.
